Height

Doubling the height more than doubles the cost. The footing gets deeper and wider, the reinforcement multiplies, and above the gravity limit the reinforced soil zone behind the wall grows with the square of the height.

What could push your price higher

  • Discovering rock or decomposed granite in the footing trench — common on the east side of Escondido and slow to break.
  • A surcharge above the wall you had not counted as one: a driveway, a patio, a pool, or a neighbour's fence footing within a 45-degree line of the wall base.
  • Clay soil, which drops the gravity height limit to about three and a half feet and pushes an otherwise simple wall into geogrid territory.

  • Terracing two shorter walls instead of one tall one — but check the setback first, because Escondido requires the upper tier to sit back at least the height of the wall below.
  • Choosing segmental block over poured concrete. Below six feet it is nearly always cheaper and just as durable when built properly.
  • A straight run instead of curves.
  • Clearing access before the crew arrives — moving the gate, cutting back planting, giving a machine a route in.
  • Keeping the wall under four feet from the bottom of the footing, where no surcharge is involved. That avoids the permit, the plan check and four to eight weeks of waiting.

Why is height measured from the bottom of the footing?

If you are near the threshold, measure from the bottom of the footing and confirm with the city before you build.

What is geogrid and do I need it?

Geogrid is a structural mesh laid in horizontal layers between block courses, extending back into the soil so the wall and the reinforced earth behave as one mass. You need it once the wall exceeds its gravity height, which depends on soil: roughly 5 ft 6 in in sand and gravel, 5 ft in silt, and only 3 ft 6 in in clay. Any slope or load above the wall lowers those limits further.

Which material is most durable?

Poured concrete has the longest lifespan of the common options, followed by grouted and reinforced CMU. But durability is decided far more by drainage and footing than by material — a well-drained block wall outlasts a poured concrete wall with no outlet every time. Water is what takes walls down.

Why does drainage matter so much?

Because saturated soil pushes on a wall with far more force than dry soil, and that hydrostatic pressure is the single most common cause of retaining wall failure. Code wants at least 12 inches of free-draining gravel behind the units and a 3-inch perforated pipe with somewhere to discharge. It is the least visible part of the job and the part that decides whether the wall is still straight in twenty years.
